Janet is a Ghanaian British female emerging artist who currently lives in Kent. She is a self-taught artist and discovered her love for art in primary school, after leaving school to pursue a career in construction in Architecture and design she stopped painting and creating art. 2 years ago she started painting again as a way to relax.
Her first painting was of her mother and then her grandmother which led to her exploring the 'older' generation as her subjects. She specifically loves to paint portraits of this generation as she imagines their stories, history and what they have been through in their lives. She specifically paints people of colour as she feels a connection to them as an older grandmother, uncle or aunty. She feels a real importance to show and see them because of the difficulties they have faced and the path they have paved for her today.
The I see you series Is a series of paintings of older generations. We don't see them at times, we don't see who they are because we can be so wrapped up in our lives. We don't see what they have been through before us. She is inspired by the older generation, their stories, their feelings, their happiness and sadness. '
I see you' is a chance to reflect, when you look at these paintings to take a moment and to see them, see someone in them and finally realise their true importance.
